Catullus was a short-lived but very influential Roman lyric poet whose surviving works are still read widely, being among the most accessible Latin poems for the modern reader. Although never considered one of the canonical school authors, Catullus’ poems were widely appreciated by other poets, and he greatly influenced other Roman poets such as Ovid , Horace and Vergil , as well as later Renaissance poets.

He died in Rome in 54 B.C. at the age of thirty. From his poems it is known that he Catullus svarer med dette digt, skrevet i et sprog fyldt af eksplicitte seksuelle udtryk, at digteren selv er og skal være kysk, men hans digte må gerne være utugtige, og at det netop er dem, der skriver søde og harmløse digte, man skal vogte sig for. Catullus wrote his poems and epigrams of personal life during the late Roman Republic, and they survive in an anthology of more than a hundred items. Many are caustic, satirical, and erotic, often lampooning well-known characters of the day including Julius Caesar and his friends. Others are tender, solemn, and graceful. Bland de romerska diktarna är Catullus den som man omedelbart och utan problem blir kompis med. Tiden är ett oväsentligt avstånd, för poetens andedräkt finns kvar i orden.

2021-04-15 · Catullus - Catullus - The poetry: A consideration of the text of Catullus’ poems and of its arrangement is of unusual interest. Its survival has been as precarious as his biography is brief. Not being part of the school syllabus, from roughly the end of the 2nd century to the end of the 12th century, it passed out of circulation.

Catullus, vars poetiska förebilder var äldre grekiska diktare som Kallimachos (c:a 305 – c:a 240 f. Kr.) och den grekiska skaldinnan Sapfo (600-talet f. Digital Library Federation, December 2002. Lesbia does indeed toy with a cock sparrow here, unlike the goldfinch on the cover of the Cambridge Companion to Catullus (CUP, 2021). But a goldfinch is a passerine (sparrow-shaped) bird. In the hands of a poet, passer could just mean the twitcher's 'little brown job' rather than the dictionary definition of sparrow.
